Edoni watched Anaxilea depart, letting his bemused smile finally break through. It wasn’t the first time he’d lied to her, but it was certainly the most blatant and ridiculous lie he’d told and it was one of the few times she hadn’t called him a liar. She believed him because she wanted to believe, which was a little sad.

Gladiators of the over games could certainly earn the privilege of a pleasure slave’s company, but as far as he knew they were brought over from the pleasure house after a grand victory and then returned in the morning. He’d thought up on the spot the notion of a private pleasure slave.

The lie did its job of motivating Anaxilea though, which was something he had given up on trying to do. To be honest, he was a little disappointed she didn’t see through his deception. Kasiani was a year older than Anaxilea, meaning she would age out a year before Anaxilea did. That alone should have cast doubt over the feasibility of the plan. It hardly mattered though. By the time Anaxilea figured out he’d lied, he would be integral to the function of the ludus and might even have leverage over Justinus and Charon.

Day by day, bit by bit, he untangled himself from the Amazon he’d been tied to ever since that fateful day all those months ago on the steppes when he threw his bolas rather than watching her die.

He leafed through his notes and found the roster sheet he’d written out with the possible plans to provide added motivation. He crossed off Anaxilea’s name. Three members of the Castles and Crowns team down—four to go.
